General Surgery Rotation (803) - U of A students
U of A Students on this third year rotation will meet in the Simulation Center located in the West Tower of Banner Good Sam off of 10th Street and McDowell on the first day of the rotation for a half day orientation. The students will be released after showing their proficiency of suturing and sterile technique, around 1 pm, to continue on to their assigned service.
The student will spend 5 weeks with the Surgical Service (all assignments are randomly selected by the Clerkship Coordinator); the services may include, but are not limited to General Surgery, Transplant, and Vascular Surgery. Locations that the student may be assigned to include Banner Good Sam, Banner Gateway, Banner Desert, Banner Estrella, VA Medical Center, Phoenix Children's Hospital and Maricopa Medical Center.
The student must take a minimum of two nights of Trauma Emergency Surgical Service (TESS) call. The TESS Call Schedule will be determained during orientation and will include a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night plus one weekday night. The trauma weekday shift begins at 5:00 pm on the assigned night and is finished the following morning at 7:00 am, or upon the completion of rounding. There are two weekend shifts - 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 7:00 am.

All students attending an LCME accredited medical school are welcome to apply for a 4th year elective through the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) at http://www.aamc.org/programs/vsas/.

- A completed Surgery Clerkship application.
The call schedule will depend on the individual service and will be decided by the attendings and residents on the service.
Please note: some services may require more call than others.
